Hellenic International Studies in the Arts (HISA) is currently the top destination for American students wanting to study abroad in Greece. This fully accredited program, a member of the Massachusetts College of Art contributing institutions, offers young writers one of the best workshop situations available anywhere. The Creative Writing courses (from beginning to advanced graduate level) are specifically designed to help writers produce a manuscript and get their work into the professional world. It also offers a well-rounded fine arts curriculum, so a full semester of study can be accomplished, all while one is living on a Greek Island!
One of our favorites is The Bread Loaf Writers' Conference, one of America's most valuable literary institutions. For the past 82 years, the workshops, lectures, and classes, held in the shadow of the Green Mountains, have introduced generations of participants to rigorous practical and theoretical approaches to the craft of writing, and given America itself proven models of literary instruction. Bread Loaf is not a retreat—not a place to work in solitude. Instead it provides a stimulating community of diverse voices in which we test our own assumptions regarding literature and seek advice about our progress as writers. Check it out!
The Shaw Guide to Writing Conferences and Workshops is an all around solid site for listing the best of what’s happening. Here there is a real variety of workshop opportunities for just about genre, and in a lot of great places, too. Find what suits you best!
